xx Potions/Theoretical Application - Pick a Potion
« Thread started on: Nov 19th, 2003, 11:38pm »

When the students filed into the dungeon this time around, they noticed the change to the dreary place immediately. It was no longer bleak and dismal in the least.

Although torches still burned to light the corners, one full wall of the dank dungeon had been bewitched to reflect the grounds outside the school. The lake was in almost perfect view, and very much resembled a mirror under the ineffectual but dazzling sunlight. The students could almost imagine their breath puffing in the late November air as they gawked in delight at the glistening drifts of snow.

A soft but teasingly mocking laugh sounded from the inner part of the dungeons, and Professor Scott stepped from the stone wall where she had been standing motionless and unseen. Seemed their Professor had changed, too.

Cassandra walked to the front of the room murmuring, "Seats, please," smiling at each student she saw. Not a half smile or a small smile, but a genuine one that lit her hazel eyes with a kindly glow. She stopped in front of her desk and gestured gracefully toward the picturesque view.

"Do you all like it?" she inquired genially. "I'll keep it that way as long as it proves NOT to be a distraction," and at this the students noticed a spark of her former strict manner.

"For your next paper, please pick a potion, any one you have a particular interest in or are drawn to. Tell me the components, anything you can about how it is made, and what it could possibly be used for. Extra points for creativity," she added generously.

As she finished, the professor sat elegantly behind her desk. The look on her face as she gazed out the window was peaceful, and her languid smile held cherished secrets close. After a moment, she drew a quill from a drawer in her desk. Smoothing a piece of parchment, she began to write.

Sharade sat down, debating on what to write. She could do, no, that wouldn't be appropriate. However, the Argentum Penna potion sounded good. Nibbling her quill, she started to write.

Potions Theory
By Sharade Diablo, of Slytherin House

For my potion, I decided to pick the Argentum Pennae Potion. The name Argentum Penna come the latin words of silver- argentums, and wings- pennae. This is a fairly difficult potion, as it requires much concentration. There is also Leprechaun gold involved in this, and this is the tricky bit. This potion can be made in under an hour, but one needs to have Leprechaun gold. Why? Because then the user of this potion will want the wings to fall off, not go around their entire life with wings. Also it contains a special agent which reacts with another that helps for the wings.

Use
This potion creates wings on the back of the drinker, wings like pure silver. These wings will stay there for as long as a month, to as little as a day, depending on how diluted the potion is. The wings will also drop off at the user’s request, although they will not come back. The user can fly with the wings, and perform stunts, dives and anything the user requests of them. A warning sign of when the wings are going to fall off is when the user has silver bubbles following them. This will happen 5 minutes before they detach themselves from your body.

Process

Ingredients-
1 ounce of ground scarab beetles
5 dried Billywig stingers
¼ of a frozen Ashwinder egg
Leprechaun gold
3 Ocammy feathers
1 ounce of aconite
½ ounce of sage

Process-
Temperature- 94o celcius exactly
To begin, mix the scarab beetles with aconite.
Add to mix sage.
Stir three times anti-clockwise.
Thinly slice Ocammy feathers, add to mix.
Leave for 3 minutes, 18 ½ seconds, before adding 3 Billywig stingers.
Wait 1 minute, 2 seconds, stir 5 ½ clockwise, then 2 times anti-clockwise.
Add 2 Billywig stingers and ¼ Ashwinder egg.
Wait 2 minutes before adding Leprechaun gold.
Leave simmering for 2 days, before drinking or bottling.

Product

Once the maker has finished, they will end up with a substance that will appear to have a clear colour, like Veritaserum, but it will have speckles of colour floating around. Once digested (this process will take no more than one minute) the drinker will experience little shocks, similar to electric shocks, running up through their back. The wings will then spout.
Warning! If one forgets to add any of these ingredients, then something will go very wrong. They interact together, causing the wings to sprout, but if one leaves anything out, at the very least one will experience terrible pain.

Absolutely flawless. Excellent detail. 20 points to Slytherin.

Laura sat back on her seat, staring at the ceiling while she thought, hard.
"What to do..." She slowly leaned back forward, dipped her quill in her green ink, and began to scrawl,

The Draught of Weightlessness
Laura Black~Gryffindor

One of my favourite potions that I have ever been allowed to make is 'The Draught of Weightlessness,' or the Levitation Potion.

Made mainly from horn of Erumpent, when taken in the right amount, will decrease the recipient's weight to that of air. This ofcourse, will result in the appearance that the person is able to fly.

To prepare this potion, you must be vary careful in the amounts of the ingredients you use, as too much or too little of one substance will cause either extreme weight, or the other extreme, weightlessness, permanently.

The ingredients in this potion must be added in the following order, into two and a half cups of water which has reached boiling point; a teaspoon of spine of lionfish, one lot of chopped daisy roots, a rat's spleen, and finally, a cup of powdered horn of Erumpent, then stew for five minutes.

One serve of the draught is one regular 250ml cup, as any more or less may have adverse effects.

The potion will wear off in 2-4 hours, unless a counter draught is taken soon after the original potion.

Overall, it is not an incredibly difficult potion to attempt, but it does require a level of competance, and I would not recommend it to beginners, or not at least if you are planning on using the final product.

Laura got to her feet, and handed the paper up, hoping that it was enough to be counted as a decent essay. She sat back down, and stretched, covering a yawn.

Decent and completely passable effort, Laura. 17 points to Gryffindor.

Anil set to work as soon as Professor Scott had finished speaking. She decided on a fairly easy, but common potion.

Potions Theory
Anil Hawkeye, Hufflepuff House

Pepperup Potion
The Pepperup Potion is a very common potion. Good against colds, cough, and variness.
It only takes about an hour to make and it has no ingredients that are hard to aquire.

Add a pint of distilled water and a spoonful of armadillo bile and warm up to 56°C. Then add 2 dinner-spoons of cinnamon and the same amount of chili-powder.
Boil for 6 minutes. Add a fair amount of smoke-solution and four porcupine quills, a shelled tubeworm and 3 evenly sliced caterpillars. Boil for 74 minutes.

Satisfactory, could have included much more detail. 14 points to Hufflepuff.

After a moment of inward debate, Branwen chose her potion and began to write.

Wit-Sharpening Potion

I chose the Wit-Sharpening Potion for my theoretical excercise. This potion is a very handy tool for students who need a bit of assistance for a tough exam. It is relatively difficult to make, but not overly so. Anyone with a firm grasp of potions would be able to easily make this concoction.

Ingredients
The ingredients of the Wit-Sharpening Potion are cut-up ginger roots, ground scarab beetle, and armadillo bile. Probably the most difficult of the three to gather is the armadillo bile. It can be purchased, but is very expensive. If you were to obtain it yourself, you would have to extract it without harming the armadillo - which can be complicated. The ginger must be harvested at the waxing moon, and the ground scarab beetle must be fresh.

Directions
The cauldron must be heated to exactly 180 degrees Fahrenheit. The dry ingredients should be put in initially, either of them is fine as the first one. The ginger roots should be cut to exactly one half-inch in length, and the scarab beetle should be ground into a fine powder. After the dry ingredients are evenly blended, the armadillo bile should be added. The potion must be stirred 7 rotations in the direction of widdershins every 7 minutes. It will take three and a half hours to finish.

Effects
The potion should be drank in its entirety immediately after it is finished. If even a minute lapses, it will not work correctly. The full effects will take place in 10 minutes, so the student should be sure to factor that time in before they attend class. The student will feel as if every passageway in their brain has been opened, and they will be able to control what they think about and more easily recall what they need to know. You shouldn't use it for the first time before going to a class, because it has a tendency to overwhelm you on its first use. The results will wear off after 3 hours, and there are no negative side effects if the potion is not made correctly. It simply will not work.

Branwen turned in her Theory assingment, noting Professor Scott's faraway gaze. She returned to her seat and waited patiently for her grade.

Very accurate description of the effects. 18 points to Ravenclaw.

Talon flipped through the pages of the spellbook he used that had also been assigned by Prof. Scott. He found the page he wanted and found a perfect potion.

The Elixer of Life~Talon Windwaltz, Gryffindor Prefect.

The finest elixer in existence is the Elixer of Life, known as the Philosopher’s, or Sorcerer’s by some, stone. It grants eternal life to whoever drinks it. It is a golden fleece to many people.

What it is made of? That is a secret that barely anyone knows. Quite frankly, one of these two people might not even know what it’s made of. I speak of Albus Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel. Nicholas Flamel created it 600 years ago when studying alchemy, during Grindenwald’s era as Dark Lord.

However, even with this useful elixer, it does wear off in time, so this great potion technically doesn’t give you eternal life, but more another century of life, or another lifetime all together. It has been used by only one, and that is Flamel himself. However, it is common belief that Dumbledore has used it himself, having such a old age and still being so vibrant.

Tom Riddle, Grindenwald’s heir as Dark Lord and Head Boy of Hogwarts during the fifties, seeked this potion out after his defeat by Harry Potter in the early eighties. However, at the time at his decision to do this, Harry Potter was just arriving for his first year at Hogwarts. The teachers of Hogwarts during the time hid the stone from Tom, and he possessed a teacher himself. The teacher’s first name is not known, but his last name was Quirrel. With this, he made his way into the darkness where the elixer was kept, but in the end was defeated by Albus Dumbledore.

Now the Elixer is destroyed, and it’s ingredients unknown. The Elixer of Life was the most excellent potion in existence by my standards. However, some people believe that playing with death is wrong. But this one has already played with Death…and won.

Talon walked up to Prof. Scott's desk and passed it in.

You paper took a very different direction than the other students - and I like that. I'm impressed that you know so much about such an obscure potion. 20 points.

Potions: Theoretical Application
For my paper, I chose the Cesoirus Envelopus, or Night Cloak, Brew. This potion may take as many as three years to prepare due to the rarity of the ingredients and the exact timing needed to gather them.

The five main ingredients in this complex potion are:
BLACK ORCHID HEARTS
small innards of the flower obtained only on a Full Moon taking place on All Hallows' Eve.
DIZZYSHRILL PHALANGES, POWDERED
the fingerbones of a cross-bred Atlantean Dragon and a Siren, beaten to a fine dust.
TWILIGHT BANSHEE TEARS
the tears of a banshee residing on the Other Side. These ghostly drops are very difficult to get, as the potion-maker must physically travel to the Underworld, and even more difficult to keep in liquid form due to the drastic increase in temperature upon the return.
DIMFAIRY WINGS
the golden wings of a black fairy possessing the power of invisibility.
DYING FOG ENTRAILS
the wisps of fog gathered in a graveyard in the company of a vengeful spirit.
VAMPIRE BLOOD
taken from a vampire child and steamed to keep the user from becoming a vampire.

The result of a successfully-made Cesoirus Envelopus Brew is that the drinker will have the ability to become a shadow for three hours exactly, granting near-invisibility and allowing the night to course through their veins. The sign of the potion wearing off will be the scream of a banshee in the mind of the drinker, so as not to give away the position. The drinker will then have three minutes to hide themselves before the potion ceases to cloak them.

The process involved in the making of this brew is as follows:
THREE BLACK ORCHID HEARTS, boiled in 1200 degree magma for three hours
THREE POWDERED DIZZYSHRILL PHALANGES, pounded to dust with an opal pestle for three days
TWELVE TWILIGHT BANSHEE TEARS, kept at a constant zero degrees for three days. Any slight increase in temperature above one-ninth a degree will negate their power.
TWO DIMFAIRY WINGS, preserved in a jar of moonlight for three months beneath a silver redwood.
DYING FOG ENTRAILS, sliced with the knife of a slain Shadowknight and hung from the ribcage of a sorcerer's cat for twelve hours.
VAMPIRE BLOOD, taken from a vampire sleeping in a circular clearing on a bed of woven willow branches and stored in a vial made of a griffin's tooth for seven days.

Preheat cauldron to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit
Pour in vampire blood, add powdered phalanges and stir constantly for nine minutes
Remove from heat and add orchid hearts, let sit for twelve hours or until frothing
Pour in banshee tears, stir for nine hours and return to 3000 degrees
Add dimfairy wings and dying fog entrails, let bubble for three hours.
Remove from heat and let cool, pour into vial and use when needed. Will stay effective for three months if kept beneath a black mushroom.

When the process is finished, the maker will have a swirling blackish-purple concoction smelling of jasmine blossoms (the smell is due to the mixing of vampire blood and dimfairy wings). Once drank, the maker will experience an intense cold for twelve seconds, after which they will no longer be able to see their body. The senses will increase twelve times in strength and the drinker may continue to experience the bouts of cold until potion wears off.

WARNING! DO NOT ADD INGREDIENTS IN ANY ORDER BUT THAT SPECIFIED!!! THE ORDER AND AMOUNT OF EACH OF THE NECESSARY ELEMENTS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND MUST NOT BE CHANGED! IF THIS HAPPENS, THE MAKER WILL BE PURSUED THROUGHOUT ETERNITY BY THE SOULS OF EVERYONE MURDERED ON ALL HALLOWS' EVE AND WILL BEGIN TO SEE POISON IN ALL FOOD, THUS SLOWLY STARVING TO DEATH. THERE IS NO REVERSAL FOR THIS BREW.

A very volatile and advanced potion. I'm extremely surprised that you even know of it's existence. Only an experienced potions master should attempt this concoction - and you're lucky to have a teacher who is exactly that. 20 points.

Lotus sat at her desk flipping through the spell book to find a potion that caught her interest. When she turned to page 93 a certain potion popped out at her and she knew she had found what her assignment would be about.

Polyjuice Potion
by Lotus-Gryffindor Student

For my potion, I have chosen the Polyjuice Potion. Polyjuice means "many juice". This potion takes to a month to be ready for use.

Use
The Polyjuice Potion is used to transform the drinker to the person they want to look like. This is what Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter did in the eighties so they could find out who the heir of Slytherin was. In this case Hermoine ended up looking like a cat. Ron and Harry ended up looking like Crabbe and Goyle so they could get into the Slthyrin Common Room and get information out of Malfoy.

Process
Ingredients:
Lacewing flies stewed 21 days,
Leeches,
Powdered bicorn horn,
Knotgrass,
Fluxweed picked at full moon,
Boomslang skin,
A bit of who you want to turn into.

Mix the ingredients together in a cauldron and let set for a month in a cool, dry place. Once it is ready add the piece of hair or whatever into the potion and drink it.

Product
After the maker is finished, they will end up with a thick, green colored potion. Once digested it only takes a few second for the potion to work and transform the maker into the person he/she wants to look like.

Because it is a very involved potion, more detail could have been included. However, you've got the basics, so 16 points.

Potions Theory
By- Winter Bliss~Gryffindor

Veritaserum

I chose to do the veritaserum, which is the most powerful truth serum available. The name Veritaserum comes from the latin word veritas-meaning truth.

USE~
The use of the veritaserum is to get someone to tell the truth. This truth serum (if done correctly) is so strong that with three drops it will have you spilling your innermost secrets instantly!Dumbledore had Snape use this potion on Barty Crouch Jr.

INGREDIENTS~
2&3/4 ounces water
jobberknoll feather
graphorn(1&1/2 pinch powdered form)
scarab beetle(1&3/4 pinches grounded into powder)
3/4 ounce dragons blood
2 catipillars(sliced)
3 daisy roots(chopped)

PROCEDURE~
First heat water to a slight simmer. Then mix the dragons blood and sliced catipillars with the water, stir counterclockwise while allowing ingredients to reach boiling point. After the mix has reached boiling point add the daisy roots and scarab beetles, stir clockwise 3 times before adding the jobberknoll feather and graphorn. Now stir 7 times counterclockwise, then 5 times clockwise.Allow potion to cool before taking.

PRODUCT~
Once the potion has been finished it should look like a clear liquid with little bubbles around the surface. After being digested effects will take place from 2-5 minutes, and the truth will start to come forward.

*WARNING* if these steps are not folowed to the T or if one of the ingredients are left out or too much is added there can be serious damages. It can provide a total opposite affect at the least so be careful and follow this to the T!!

gracefully strides upto the teachers desk handing in the paper and smiling confidently while saying "here you go proffessor,i hope i score good"....walks away with a confident gleam in her big silver flecked dark blue eyes....

Good job, Winter. It would be a 16 point paper, however, you are a Faerie, and I am unsure as to what house your points would be awarded to. ~CS

Rose took a seat close to the illusion of the lake, hoping that it would not be a problem that she hadn't been to the other classes. She pulled out a peice of parchment, her hawk quill and blue ink. It took her a minute to decide which potion to write about, but then she thought of an easy one that she knew relatively well.

Potions/Theoretical Application- Pick a Potion

It's always important to know a potion that can be useful in every day life, and dire circumstances. With the ability to be complex, but also a startling simplicity. Ingredients that are accecible, easy to remember, but also contain an almost art to them. When you think of all of these things, one potion should come to mind. The Shrink Solution.
This potion is made of chopped daisy roots, skinned shrivelfig, sliced caterpillar, one rat spleen, and a dash of leech juice, which are all easy to find. It could be used to shrink your handwriting, your teeth, pimples on an adolecent's face, OR to shrink the wand of an enemy, or another body part useful to an opponent. The way of making it (explained in next paragraph) is complicated, but the ingredients are simple. All of these things point to an amazing, useful potion.
Pay attention, for the way of making a shrinking solution isn't easy. The first thing to drop in is, of coruse, the daisy roots, which have to be precisely cut into half inch squares. Next goes the skinned shrivelfig, which is simple, and then the sliced caterpillar, but this insect MUST be within five days of entering it's cacoon state. The rat's spleen next, then a dash of leech juice from a leech that is at least half full of animal blood. Stir precisely 26 times and wait for bubbling to stop.

Very insightful answer. 18 points to Hufflepuff.

Lilliean rememberng the deatheaters that attacked her as a child rememberd the tale of Voldemort.

She had learned as a princess and a witch of vast power at a young age not to fear evil, so saying his name never hurt or made her feel scared or icky.

Voldemorts potion.

In his quest to achieve immortality, Voldemort used three different potions:

1.
ingredient: unicorn blood

Voldemort seduced on of his followers to house his "soul" if you could call it that (his essance), then kill unicorns and drink their blood to allow the Dark Lord to survive.

Unicorn blood will gave him a cursed life because he killed something defenseless and of absolute purity and innocence to save his evil life.

Voldemort didn't care obvious because he was only trying to stay alive until he could drink the Elixer of Life from the Philosopher's Stone.

The effects are instant, both the positive and the negitive.

Unicorn's blood is not a potion in and of itself. Many potions contain unicorn's blood as an ingredient, however, and since you did make an effort, I will award five points to Ravenclaw.

wow, proffesor's new room looks great! thought Aurora. oooo but i can't let it distract me i've got to finish this paper

The Photograph Potion.
Use:If you develop muggle pictures in this solution the resulting images will move.

Ingrediants:
1: 3 dried Billywig stings
2: 6 black beetle eyes (powdered)
3: 10 ml of fluxweed powder
4: 4 lacewing flies
5: 1 rat spleen
6: 1 ounce wormwood
7: 7 L of water

Procedure: Bring water to a slow boil, it is important to keep it slow because if it boils too fast the ingredients will be mixed together too quickly and your pictures will move in fast forward. Slow stir in 4 of the bettle eyes anti-clockwise. Add the fluxweed powder. Stir 5 times clockwise. Thinly slice the rat spleen and stir it in. Stir in the last two beetle eyes anti-clockwise. powder the lacewing flies and the billywig stings together and stir them in anti-clockwise. Grind the wormwood coarsely and add it in [i]Do not stir it in. Let the solution cool for three hours. Then develop your pictures as normal.

That should do it. thought Aurora as she brought her paper up and placed it on the teacher's desk. I hope.

Other than very minor grammatical errors, excellent job and interesting choice of potion. 17 points.

Draught of the Living Death

asphodel in an infusion of wormwood

Causes someone to fall into a deep sleep.

Ingredients:
wolfbane
powdered root of asphodel
bezoar
horned slugs
nettles
porcupine quills
snake fangs
wormwood

This potion was used by Hermione when she filled the two chocolate cakes with Sleeping Draught and placed them for Crabbe and Goyle. This was done for the polyjuice potion to fool Draco. Also used to knowck out the dragons to transport them to Hogwarts for the first task in the Triwizard Tournament.

Acceptable paper, however, you did not give me the process of concocting this potion. Also, please refrain from using shadowed ink next time. 10 points.

The Wolfsbane Potion is one of the most recent and groundbreaking discoveries in potion-making discovered thus far. The Wolfsbane Potion is used as a type of temporary sedative, if you will, of a person who undergoes the transformation from human to werewolf.

Normally, a full werewolf transformation, if contained, is extremely painful and horrifying to both watch and experience. If isolated, a werewolf will bite and scratch itself in place of victims. While the Wolfsbane Potion does little to ease the pain of the transformation, if the person drinks the Wolfsbane Potion daily for at least one week prior to the full moon, the potion will allow them to transform into a harmless wolf of normal size and aggression. This, in turn, eliminates the self-inflicted injuries and any danger to others around said werewolf.

The Wolfsbane Potion contains a menagerie of ingredients, most having in common one thing: their relation to the moon. Depending on the strength of the potion, which is still being experimented with, 1/8 to 1/2 of a cup of chopped fluxweed can be used, along with 1 to 2 spines of lionfish, 2-4 ounces of powdered moonstone, 1/2 to 2 1/2 cups of leech juice and 2-8 cups of water may be used. Combine the leech juice and water first and bring to a boil. Bring the solution down to a simmer and add the fluxweed and moonstone simultaneously, stirring them in three times. The potion should become a cerulean blue color. Next add the lionfish spine(s) and stir four times.

Simmer for three days, stirring ten times each day (stir a total of 30 times, or 31 times depending on the month the potion is being prepared for, 28-29 times for February). The color when finished should be a dark purple-black, and when poured should smoke slightly from the goblet, glass or bowl. Drinker should consume one goblet per day one week prior to transformation, and one goblet on the day of transformation.

The Wolfsbane Potion, as said before, is a new discovery and is still being perfected, and precision and exact following of directions is vital to the success of this potion.

Setting her quill back down, Piper stood up and handed her paper in with a short smile to Professor Scott.

Another potion I did not expect a student to be so knowledgable about. Outstanding work, Piper. 19 points ~CS
